Emy Coligado
Emy Coligado is an actor, born 1971.
A sitcom in-law is the role that stuck. Coligado, born in Geneva, Ohio in 1971, played Piama Tananahaakna on Malcolm in the Middle, a character who married into a family of relentless shouting and responded by refusing to raise her voice at all. It is a hard trick in a broad comedy, being the calm one, and it made Piama the person viewers were pleased to see turn up. She is back in the part for the 2026 revival, Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair, which is an unusually long second act for a supporting player.
The rest of her television is steady character work, some of it recurring: Emmy, the medical examiner's assistant, on Crossing Jordan, Carlotta in the Apple TV series The Changeling, and Lily McManus in The Catch. Where to start with Emy Coligado
There is only one honest first stop here, and that is Malcolm in the Middle. Piama arrives to complicate the oldest brother's life and immediately becomes the show's most grounded adult, which is a genuinely difficult assignment on a series that runs on volume.
From there, Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair is the revival with the same character two decades on, and it is worth seeing what the years do to a part that was written as a stabilising influence.
For the dramatic register, The Changeling is the most ambitious thing on her list, a strange and expensive fairy tale that lets her play something colder. Crossing Jordan is the reliable procedural work, The Three Stooges the broad studio comedy, and Don't Come Knocking the outlier, a slow American road picture where a one-scene part still gets composed like a painting.
