Eddie Peng Yu-Yan

Eddie Peng Yu-Yan is a Taiwanese actor, singer and model who has spent most of his working life in the pan-Chinese film industry, which means Hong Kong crime pictures, mainland blockbusters and Taiwanese romance, often in the same year. Hear Me in 2009 is the early title his reputation was built on.

The filmography is unusually easy to read because it comes in pairs. He plays Joe Lee Ka-cheun in Cold War and again in Cold War II. He plays Fang Zi Jing in Tai Chi Zero and again in Tai Chi Hero, shot back to back. Around those sit the big mainland action films, Operation Mekong and The Rescue, the Hollywood co-production The Great Wall, and the martial arts spectacles Rise of the Legend and Immortal Demon Slayer. Then, in a different register entirely, the romances and comedies: Fleet of Time, A Wedding Invitation, Love, Duckweed, Hidden Man.

What he is good at is a very specific kind of physical conviction. Unbeatable and To The Fore both put a physical transformation on screen as the main event, and both hold up better than their plots do.

The 2024 turn is the interesting one. Black Dog premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival and won the Un Certain Regard prize, and it moved him out of the blockbuster lane he had occupied for a decade into something sparse, dusty and almost wordless. His earliest credits, meanwhile, are Taiwanese and mainland television: Chinese Paladin, The Young Warriors, Sound of the Desert.
