Duncan Fraser
Duncan Fraser is an actor.
Engineering was the original plan. Fraser went to London University to study aeronautical engineering, found it too mathematical, switched to psychology, then spent years travelling before settling near Vancouver in 1974 and turning to acting. He also ran theatre, with years as director of the Nanaimo Theatre Festival and as associate director of Vancouver's Fend Players.
His timing was excellent, if accidental. Vancouver became one of the busiest production centres in North America and Fraser was already living there, which is why his filmography reads like a register of everything shot in British Columbia for forty years. The 1985 film Overnight brought him a Genie nomination for Best Supporting Actor, and his regular role as Staff Sgt. Regan on Da Vinci's Inquest brought a Gemini nomination in 2000. Neither is the work most people have accidentally seen him in.
That would be the small, solid, unshowy men: the obstetrician in The Fly II (1989), Hugh Priest in Needful Things (1993), a British officer in Seven Years in Tibet (1997), Dr. Cartwright in The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005), Captain Lovett in Eight Below (2006), a psychiatrist in The Predator (2018), the older Henry in The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020). He is who a production hires when a scene needs an adult to say something plausible and then get out of the way, and he has done it long enough that the face registers before the name does.

Where to start with Duncan Fraser
Sort his credits by billing and you learn nothing, because the interesting ones are scattered. Watch The Reflecting Skin first: it is the strangest thing on his list by a wide margin, a prairie gothic that treats a 1950s childhood as a horror film, and it gives him something more particular than the professionals he usually plays.
After that, Needful Things for the Stephen King small-town machinery, and The Exorcism of Emily Rose, the tidiest piece of filmmaking here, which uses him exactly as most productions do: as an expert whose testimony has to sound true. Eight Below is the family one, The Haunting of Bly Manor the recent prestige credit, and The Fly II the one where a two-minute scene sets up everything ugly that follows.
