Dennis Haysbert
Dennis Haysbert is an actor, born 1954.
Dennis Haysbert has one of the most recognisable voices in American film and television, a bass register that suggests institutional authority before he has finished a sentence. It took him a while to be cast that way. His first widely seen role was Pedro Cerrano, the slugger with the voodoo shrine in Major League in 1989, a broad comic part he plays with complete seriousness, which is why it is funny at all.
The turn came in the nineties. He is the ex-convict line cook in Heat, a couple of scenes that carry more human weight than most of the film's gunfire. Then Far from Heaven in 2002 gave him Raymond Deagan, a gardener in 1950s Connecticut whose dignity is the pressure the entire film builds on, and it remains the finest thing he has done.
Television made him famous. David Palmer across the first five seasons of 24 became national shorthand for presidential steadiness, and Sergeant Major Jonas Blane on The Unit gave him six years of the same quality in fatigues, earning him a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor on Television. More recently he has played God on Lucifer, which is close to typecasting as a compliment.
The voice keeps working independently of him: he narrates A&E's American Justice, and he has an animation career that runs from Master Storming Ox in Kung Fu Panda 2 to Wreck-It Ralph and Sinbad. Very few actors can make exposition sound like a verdict.

Where to start with Dennis Haysbert
Far from Heaven first, without hesitation. It is his best performance by a distance, all restraint, and it uses the authority of that voice by giving the character almost no power at all.
For television, 24 is the obvious one and holds up better than the rest of the show, while The Unit is the underseen military drama where he got a genuine lead. Lucifer is the late-career fun.
The films split neatly. Heat is two scenes of extraordinary quiet work inside a crime epic. Major League is the comedy that made him, and Cerrano is still a great creation. Absolute Power is the efficient nineties thriller version of him, and Love & Basketball gives him a difficult, unsentimental father role that is worth seeking out.
The television roles
David Palmer on 24 is the one that mattered, a fictional president who felt plausible several years before the country tried it, and The Unit gave him five seasons of the same authority in a much smaller room.
The serious film work
Where the acting is, mostly in films where he is not the lead. Far from Heaven is a Todd Haynes melodrama that gives him a full interior life, and Love Field and Waiting to Exhale are the earlier proof.
The comedies and the voice work
Pedro Cerrano is the comic performance people still quote thirty-five years later, and the animation work is where the voice gets used exactly as advertised, generally for authority figures and generally in one or two scenes.
