Debra Jo Rupp
Debra Jo Rupp is an actor, born 1951.
Debra Jo Rupp took a drama degree at the University of Rochester and spent the late 1980s and 1990s doing what character actresses did then: a scene in Big as Miss Patterson, a psychiatric patient in Death Becomes Her, Mrs. Hall in Sgt. Bilko, Barbara in Clockwatchers, Alice Knight on Friends between 1997 and 1998.
Then That '70s Show, where she played Kitty Forman from 1998, and where the laugh became the instrument. Kitty is written as a warm sitcom mother. Rupp plays her as a woman holding a household together on nerves and volume, and the laugh is the tell, pitched somewhere between delight and hysteria. It is a much more precise piece of work than a broad-audience sitcom usually gets.
She came back to the part for That '90s Show in 2023 and 2024, which means she was still playing Kitty Forman twenty-five years after she started.
The most interesting recent work is the Marvel material. WandaVision cast her as Sharon Davis, playing a neighbour called Mrs. Hart whose sitcom cheerfulness is asked to break in ways sitcom neighbours are never asked to break, and Agatha All Along brought her back in 2024. It is a knowing use of exactly the thing she is famous for. Elsewhere: Janice on The Ranch, Vicky on Better with You, Mrs. Helperman across both the Teacher's Pet series and its film, and voice parts in the Buddies pictures.

Where to start with Debra Jo Rupp
That '70s Show is the reason to be here, and the first episode will tell you inside one scene whether Kitty is for you. That '90s Show is the reunion, and she is comfortably the best thing in it.
The sharper recommendation is WandaVision, which takes the warmth she spent eight seasons building and uses it as a pressure point. Watch it with the older show fresh in your head and the casting becomes very funny. Agatha All Along follows straight on from it.
For the older work, Friends has her in a short run of episodes, Big gives her a single scene in a very good film, and Clockwatchers is the obscure one, the only place in this list where she is playing something entirely unlike Kitty Forman.
The Forman house and after
Kitty Forman across eight seasons and then again twenty five years later, which is a rare thing for any sitcom parent to be handed. The laugh alone carries about six distinct meanings and she deploys all of them.
The film credits
Small parts in large comedies through the late eighties and nineties, usually as the receptionist, the attendant or the woman with one perfect line. Clockwatchers is the one worth seeking out.
The neighbour and the guest star
The role she has played more than any other: the woman next door whose relentless cheerfulness is doing something to the room. Marvel built one of the better WandaVision jokes on exactly that quality.
The family films
A long run of talking-dog pictures and children's adventures where she does voice work and warm authority figures. These are not the reason to look her up, but they are a fair chunk of the working life.
