Dave Gibbons is an art director.
Gibbons drew Watchmen, and the nine-panel grid he held to for twelve issues is as responsible for that book's reputation as anything in the script. The discipline is the point: no splash pages showing off, symmetry you only notice on a reread, and a colour sense that makes a superhero comic feel like a document. He worked across British and American comics for decades either side of it, and he letters his own work, which almost nobody does.
