Dale Dickey
Dale Dickey is an actor, born 1961.
Dale Dickey came out of Knoxville and out of the theatre. She was in the 1989 Broadway production of The Merchant of Venice and spent years in revivals of A Streetcar Named Desire and Sweeney Todd, off Broadway and in regional houses, and she holds two Ovation Awards for her stage work in Los Angeles. None of that is what she gets hired for.
Screen casting decided early that her face meant hardship, and she has spent thirty years turning a narrow assignment into a real body of work. The breakthrough was Merab in Winter's Bone, the matriarch of a family that has decided a girl is asking the wrong questions, and it won her the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female in 2011. What makes it great is that Merab is not a monster. She is enforcing rules she did not write and does not enjoy, and Dickey plays the tiredness rather than the menace.
Since then she has been the actor directors call when a scene needs someone who looks like she has worked outdoors and been lied to. She is in Hell or High Water, Super 8, Leave No Trace, Blood Father, Iron Man 3 and Palm Springs, usually for two scenes and always at the centre of them, and she was Patty on My Name Is Earl for the comic version of the same face. The development worth noting is that leads have started arriving: A Love Song, in 2022, is built entirely around her, and it turns out that the woman everyone cast as hard-bitten can carry a whole film of tenderness.

Where to start with Dale Dickey
Winter's Bone is the obvious start and also the correct one. It shows the whole instrument, and her scenes with Jennifer Lawrence carry a threat that nobody has to raise a voice to establish.
Follow it with A Love Song, because the contrast is the entire point: the same actor, alone at a campsite with a folding chair and a memory, playing shyness and warmth. Leave No Trace is the third essential, a small kindness in a film full of them. Hell or High Water and Super 8 are the two-scene appearances that demonstrate how efficiently she works. Unbelievable is the television to see. And My Name Is Earl is where an entirely different audience knows her from, playing broad comedy with exactly the same conviction she brings to the hard stuff.
