Cormac McCarthy is an author.
Cormac McCarthy wrote twelve novels, two plays and five screenplays across the Southern Gothic, the Western and the post-apocalyptic, and he did it with almost no punctuation: no quotation marks, few commas, attribution left to the reader. The early Tennessee books are grotesque and largely unread. Blood Meridian, in 1985, moved him to the Texas border and produced the most violent great American novel. All the Pretty Horses won the National Book Award and finally sold in quantity; The Road took the Pulitzer Prize. He spent decades at the Santa Fe Institute among physicists and mathematicians, which is where the two late novels come from.

Where to start with Cormac McCarthy
All the Pretty Horses is the sane place to start, the most beautiful sentences and the least punishment. Blood Meridian is the one that matters and the one to work up to, relentless from the first page, with a judge who is the most frightening figure in American fiction. The Road is the shortest way to understand why people care. Suttree is the funny one, which surprises everybody, and No country for old men reads like the screenplay it nearly was.
