Cole Hauser
Cole Hauser is an actor, born 1975.
For most of thirty years, Cole Hauser was the actor you recognized without quite being able to place. School Ties, Benny in Dazed and Confused, Higher Learning, then Billy McBride in Good Will Hunting: the loyal, faintly menacing friend, cast for a physical presence that reads as threat even when the character is decent. Tigerland in 2000 was the first film to take him seriously, and it brought an Independent Spirit Award nomination.
He is not a chameleon and has never pretended otherwise. What he has is stillness and a low voice, and he uses them on men who are either the most dangerous person in the room or the most dependable one, occasionally both. Johns in Pitch Black is the good version of the first, a bounty hunter with a habit and a nasty streak, played without a note of apology. Carter Verone in 2 Fast 2 Furious is the pure villain, and that film knows exactly what it is buying.
The 2000s and 2010s were journeyman years, mostly action pictures: Tears of the Sun, Hart's War, The Cave, Olympus Has Fallen, A Good Day to Die Hard, Transcendence. Plenty of them are forgettable and he is rarely the reason. Then Yellowstone put him where he had always belonged. Rip Wheeler is a ranch enforcer with unbreakable loyalty and no interest in explaining himself, and the part fits Hauser so precisely that it looks less like casting than recognition. He carries it forward into the spin-off Dutton Ranch.

Where to start with Cole Hauser
Rip Wheeler is the best-written thing he has ever been handed, so Yellowstone is both the obvious start and the right one, and the performance holds a five-season show together whenever the plotting wobbles.
Before that, Pitch Black is the essential one: a lean, ugly, extremely well-made monster film in which he plays the second most interesting character and never once gets outacted. Tigerland is the serious drama, a boot-camp film shot rough and cheap, and the place where he showed range.
Good Will Hunting and Dazed and Confused are the early credits worth catching, both small. 2 Fast 2 Furious is precisely as ridiculous as you remember and he makes a very good villain in it. Most of the direct-to-video action work between then and Yellowstone is skippable, though Tears of the Sun holds up better than its reputation.
