Cam Gigandet

Gigandet's break was Kevin Volchok on The O.C., a surfer who arrives late in the show's run to wreck things, and it set the template for nearly everything after: he is very good at handsome men with no impulse control. Twilight made that commercially useful in 2008. James is on screen for a fraction of the film and is its only real threat, and Gigandet plays him as a predator enjoying his afternoon, which is more menace than the material had earned.

The three years after that were the busiest of his career: Never Back Down as the fighter to beat, Pandorum, The Unborn, The Experiment, Burlesque as the sympathetic bartender, Priest, Trespass, The Roommate, and Easy A, where he is genuinely funny as a boy caught in a scandal he cannot handle. Studio work rarely asked him for more than a jawline and a smirk, and the part that would have proved otherwise never arrived.

Since then he has worked constantly and mostly outside cinemas. Reckless and Ice gave him leads on television. The Magnificent Seven and Without Remorse are the recognisable studio credits. The rest is a long list of low-budget action and thriller pictures made for streaming, which is a real job and an unglamorous one. Violent Night in 2022 is the best of the recent lot and shows what he can still do when a film has an actual sense of humour about its villains.
