Callum Turner

Callum Turner (born 1990) modelled before he acted, which is usually the sort of detail that predicts a short career. It has not gone that way. He had leads straight out of the gate in the drama Queen and Country and the mystery series Glue, both in 2014, and then spent several years being cast as handsome and slightly untrustworthy: Anatole in War and Peace, Frank Churchill in the 2020 Emma, men whose manners are doing work their intentions do not support.

The Capture (2019) is where the range showed up. Playing a soldier at the wrong end of a surveillance case, Turner had to stay watchable while being disbelieved, and the performance earned him a nomination for the British Academy Television Award for Best Actor. The franchise work sat around it: Theseus Scamander, brother of Newt, in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, a part written as a straight man in a series with little use for straight men.

Since then he has moved into the leading slot properly, as the oarsman Joe Rantz in The Boys in the Boat and as Major John Egan in Masters of the Air, the latter giving him the loudest man in the room and then a long war in which to wear that down.
