Betsy Brandt
Betsy Brandt is an actor, born 1973.
Marie Schrader is the credit that matters and the one most easily misread. Across Breaking Bad, from 2008 to 2013, Brandt played the sister-in-law: chatty, needling, colour-coordinated, and written for a long stretch as the most irritating presence in the show. The cast took three Screen Actors Guild ensemble nominations across that run, and one win.
What she did with an unrewarding part is the reason to pay attention. She played the anxiety underneath the chatter from very early on, so that when the series eventually required Marie to be devastated, the foundation had been quietly laid years in advance. That is a long game, and most actors given a supporting comic role never bother with it.
The work since has been mostly comedy: Annie Henry in The Michael J. Fox Show, from 2013 to 2014, then Life in Pieces from 2015 to 2019, which asked her to anchor a family across four interlocking stories an episode and made almost no use of her range. The Unicorn and Fairly Legal sit in the same bracket.
The dramatic parts are where she gets more interesting: Barbara Sanderson in Masters of Sex (2013), Stephanie Novak in Pearson (2019), Mia Thomas in Saint X (2023). Her films are small: a banker in Magic Mike (2012), Run Sweetheart Run (2020), Straight Up (2020), The Valet (2022). Somebody should give her a lead.

Where to start with Betsy Brandt
Rewatch Breaking Bad with her in mind and it becomes a different performance from the one you remember. Marie is comic relief for a long time, and Brandt is quietly seeding the panic underneath from the first season onward, which is why the later material hits as hard as it does.
Masters of Sex is the best of the dramatic supporting work and the strongest evidence that she should be leading things. Saint X is the recent one, a slow limited series in which she is very good and barely raises her voice.
For comedy, Life in Pieces is the easy watch and a fair sample of what network sitcoms wanted from her, and The Michael J. Fox Show is the short-lived one that deserved better.
The films are minor. Magic Mike gives her very little, The Valet is pleasant, and Straight Up is the one worth seeking out, a fast, verbal indie comedy that finally gives her something with edges.
