Ayo Edebiri
Ayo Edebiri is an actor, born 1995.
She was writing before she was starring, and it shows in the acting. Edebiri, from Boston, wrote for television first, including on Big Mouth, where she later took over the voice of Missy, and she has since directed as well, earning a Directors Guild of America nomination for the Bear episode Napkins.
Sydney Adamu in The Bear, from 2022, is the performance the rest of the industry hired her off, and it collected a Golden Globe, a Primetime Emmy for supporting actress in a comedy, two Actor Awards, a Critics' Choice and an Independent Spirit Award. What makes it good is that she plays ambition as anxiety rather than hunger. Sydney is the most technically capable person in the kitchen and the least convinced she is allowed to be there, and Edebiri holds both of those in the same take, usually while somebody else is shouting.
The film work has been picking at the same nerve from different angles. Josie in Bottoms is the comic version, a teenager whose confidence is entirely fraudulent. Opus and After the Hunt, both from 2025, put her in rooms full of powerful people who are not safe, and both trade on how convincingly she can be the youngest person present without being the least intelligent.
The animation is the commercial ballast: Envy in Inside Out 2, April O'Neil across Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and its sequel, Glory in Across the Spider-Verse. Her Broadway debut came in Proof in 2026. It is an unusually fast rise and the work has not yet shown signs of thinning.

Where to start with Ayo Edebiri
The Bear is unavoidable, and pretending otherwise would be perverse. Start at the first season, when Sydney is the outsider trying to fix a kitchen that resents her, because the later seasons only make sense once you have seen how little standing she starts with.
Then Bottoms, which is the funniest thing she has done and the clearest proof that the anxious register works as comedy. It is crude, very fast, and she is the best thing in it.
For the serious end, Opus and After the Hunt make a decent double bill: two 2025 films about young women being handled by influential people, neither entirely successful, both worth it for her. The Sweet East is the strangest thing on the list.
The animation is genuinely good and not a compromise. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem gives her the most to do, Inside Out 2 the biggest audience, and Big Mouth is where the whole career started, on the writing staff.
