Aya Yamane

Scroll through Aya Yamane's early credits and most of the characters have no names. Reporter. Female Customer. Festival visitor. Woman Warrior. Third Consort. Child. That is the real apprenticeship of a Japanese voice actor, years of one-line parts in other people's shows, and Yamane worked through it while also performing as a singer.

The named roles arrived gradually and then all at once: Ikumi Akagi in the Rascal Does Not Dream series, Shisel in Magatsu Wahrheit, Ruhuyu in Show by Rock, Benisumomo in In the Heart of Kunoichi Tsubaki, Riho Tsukishima in The Cafe Terrace and Its Goddesses, Cathy in Sugar Apple Fairy Tale, Daitaku Helios in Umamusume. By the middle of the 2020s she was carrying leads, among them Misao Makimachi in the 2023 Rurouni Kenshin, Subaru Hoshina in The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity, Tsubame in Dandadan and Mio Takahashi in the film My Oni Girl.

What she is good at is brightness with a hard edge under it, which is why she keeps being cast as the loud girl who is also the most sensible person in the room. Misao is the clearest case, a character other actors have played before her, pitched fast enough to be funny and grounded enough to survive the show's more serious turns.
