Atsuko Tanaka
Atsuko Tanaka is an actor, born 1962.
Atsuko Tanaka came to voice acting late and by an unglamorous route. She was drawn to performing young, worked as a background extra at Shochiku while studying at Ferris University, then spent years as an office lady for a Tokyo executive before enrolling at the Tokyo Announcement Academy and joining Mausu Promotion, the agency she stayed with until her death in 2024.
She was in her early thirties when Mamoru Oshii's Ghost in the Shell arrived in 1995, and the part it gave her, Major Motoko Kusanagi, is one of the few in anime where flatness is the point. Kusanagi is a manufactured body with a human mind inside it and no interest in reassuring anybody, and Tanaka voiced her almost without inflection: low, level, no lift at the end of a line. That reading held across nearly thirty years of the franchise, through Innocence, the Stand Alone Complex series and films, and SAC_2045.
Because of it she became the default for women who outrank the protagonist. Konan in Naruto Shippuden, Caster across the Fate adaptations, Lisa Lisa in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Reiko Tamura in Parasyte, Sirene in Devilman Crybaby, Hanami in Jujutsu Kaisen, Poison Ivy in Batman Ninja, Trish in Devil May Cry, plus Bayonetta and Chun-Li in Street Fighter III on the games side. She was still working at that level at the end: Flamme in Frieren: Beyond Journey's End arrived in 2023, less than a year before she died.

Where to start with Atsuko Tanaka
Ghost in the Shell first, without hesitation. Kusanagi barely raises her voice in it, and Tanaka makes that the most interesting thing on the soundtrack: a person working out, in real time, how much of herself is still hers.
Follow it with Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, which gives the same performance room to relax across a full series, and then Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence if the philosophy suits you. Outside the franchise, Parasyte -the maxim- is the best showcase: Reiko Tamura has to sound like something that learned human speech very recently, and it is genuinely unsettling. JUJUTSU KAISEN has her as Hanami, a monster with a gentle voice, and Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is the graceful late one, a mentor voiced with all the weight of somebody who had been doing this for thirty years.
The Ghost in the Shell canon
Nearly thirty years as Motoko Kusanagi across films, series and reboots, which is one of the longest single-character runs in animation. The 1995 film is where the voice arrives fully formed and everything after is variation.
The dangerous women
Low, dry and entirely unbothered, which made her the obvious casting whenever a production needed someone older and more capable than the protagonist. Bayonetta and Caster are the two most people name.
The recent work
She kept working steadily until the end, and the late roles are among the best. Flamme in Frieren is a small part with enormous weight behind it, and Devilman Crybaby uses her for pure menace.
The quiet ones
The register that gets overlooked because the action roles are louder. Your Lie in April and The Piano Forest both use her for a kind of adult sadness that anime rarely has the patience for.
