Child actors usually get one good part. Ariana Greenblatt has had a run of them, beginning with the Disney Channel comedy Stuck in the Middle, which ran from 2016 to 2018, then working through A Bad Moms Christmas, Avengers: Infinity War and In the Heights, where she played the younger Nina.

Then 2023 put three of her credits in front of audiences at once: the survival science fiction film 65, the space opera series Ahsoka, and Barbie, where she played Sasha. Barbie is the one that changed the size of her career, and it brought her nominations at the Critics' Choice and Screen Actors Guild Awards. Her particular skill is playing teenagers who are unimpressed, and holding that register without ever making it cute. The contempt reads as real, which is what allows the rest of the performance to move.

Since then she has taken the loud parts. Tiny Tina in Borderlands asked her to supply an entire film's energy on her own with very little support around her. Fear Street: Prom Queen and Now You See Me: Now You Don't have kept her in wide releases. The most interesting work is still the smaller stuff, and Minnow in Love and Monsters is the performance to point at when someone claims child actors cannot underplay.

Where to start with Ariana Greenblatt

Everyone arrives via Barbie, fairly enough, though the part is smaller than its reputation suggests. The better introduction is Love and Monsters, a monster movie considerably sharper than it needed to be, with Greenblatt playing dry against a nervous lead. Follow it with 65 for the same register at bigger scale and half the charm.

After that, In the Heights and The One and Only Ivan cover the earlier work, and Stuck in the Middle shows the Disney training that made her this fluent this young. Borderlands is the one to skip unless you want to watch how much load a young actor can be asked to carry alone.
