Where to start with Anna Madeley
If you want the version of her that people love, All Creatures Great & Small is it, and it rewards steady viewing in a way prestige drama rarely does. Mrs Hall is the show's centre of gravity, played without a single wasted gesture.
For the actor rather than the comfort, go to Patrick Melrose, a much colder story in which she holds her own against a cast full of louder work. Time is the most affecting of her recent television. The Ones Below is the pick for a genuinely uncomfortable evening, a small domestic thriller that keeps tightening. Utopia hands her a strange, hard edged part in a series with a look nothing since has matched. In Bruges and The Little Stranger are small roles in good films, worth noting rather than seeking out.
