Amie Kaufman is an Australian author of science fiction and fantasy for young adults, and a serial collaborator: the Starbound trilogy and Unearthed with Meagan Spooner, The Illuminae Files with Jay Kristoff, and the Elementals series on her own. The Illuminae books are the ones that made her name, told through transcripts, chat logs, ship schematics and redacted files rather than ordinary narration. Her books have been published in more than 35 countries and have reached the New York Times bestseller list, which is rare for a format this experimental.

Where to start with Amie Kaufman
Illuminae is the one to start with, and the format is the reason: a whole space disaster assembled from documents, with typography doing work most novels leave to adjectives. Gemina repeats the trick on a space station and is nearly as good. These Broken Stars is the conventional entry, a survival romance for readers who want a plot they can hold. Aurora Rising is the loudest and funniest of the lot.
