Alex Désert
Alex Désert is an actor, born 1968.
Most people have met Alex Désert twice without noticing: once on screen and once as a voice. Born in New York City in 1968, he came up through late-1980s television in TV 101, then played the police lab scientist Julio Mendez opposite John Wesley Shipp on the 1990 version of The Flash, Eli Williams on Boy Meets World, and eventually took a long run as Jake Malinak, the blind newsstand owner, on Becker.
In film he specialised in the one person in the friend group who says the true thing. Charles in Swingers is the clearest case, the voice of realism among men committed to not hearing it, and he delivers the line "This place is dead anyway," which people still quote. Louis in High Fidelity is cut from similar cloth. Neither part is large. Both are the kind people remember.
The other career is voice work, and it has quietly become the bigger one. He was Nick Fury on The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, has worked across the current Marvel animation as Swarm and as Grift, and since 2020 he has voiced Carl Carlson and Lou on The Simpsons, taking over from Hank Azaria. He also sings, as a founding member of the Los Angeles ska band Hepcat, which is a more serious sideline than most actors manage. The live-action work continues in between, in A League of Their Own and Better Things, and it is a career built entirely out of parts that were never the biggest on the page.

Where to start with Alex Désert
An evening with Swingers tells you most of it: he is in the friend group, he is the only one being honest, and he gets the line everybody repeats. Follow it with High Fidelity for the same skill inside a better film.
Television is where the volume is. Becker is the long-running role and the one to sit with if you want him as a series regular rather than a scene stealer, and Boy Meets World is the nostalgic pick. The Flash is a genuine curio, a short-lived superhero show made decades before the current one, with him as the lab tech who makes the science sound plausible.
For the voice work, The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes is the best-made of it and The Simpsons is the ongoing job. PCU is the 1990s campus comedy for completists.
