Alanna Ubach
Alanna Ubach is an actor, born 1975.
Ubach has worked continuously since she was a teenager, starting on children's television with Beakman's World and picking up small parts in Sister Act 2, Airborne and The Brady Bunch Movie. Clockwatchers and Freeway in the late nineties showed she could do something other than comic relief, and then Legally Blonde made Serena, one third of a sorority chorus, into a character people still quote.
The skill is precision inside broadness. She plays loud people without losing the person underneath: Serena, Isabel Villalobos in Meet the Fockers, Naomi in Waiting..., all pitched high and all internally consistent. That control is why she has had such a long second career in animation. Mama Imelda in Coco is the family matriarch responsible for the ban on music in the first place, and Ubach makes her stubbornness sympathetic rather than shrill, which is the hinge the whole film swings on.
More recently she has been used for something harder. Suze Howard on Euphoria is a suburban mother whose comic timing keeps landing on genuinely bleak material, and the show relies on her to make its worst scenes bearable. She appears in The Last of Us, Mythic Quest and The Flight Attendant, and she played Jeanine Pirro in Bombshell.
It is one of the more useful careers in American screen acting: three decades of film, television and voice work, dozens of credits nobody attaches to a single face, and no obvious ceiling anywhere in it.

Where to start with Alanna Ubach
Coco is the one to watch first, and not only because it is the biggest thing on the list. Imelda is the character the plot turns on, and Ubach plays a matriarch who is wrong about something important without ever making her ridiculous.
For live action, Euphoria is her best recent work: the timing is comic and the material is anything but, and she holds both at once. Legally Blonde is the role people still shout at her in the street, and it is a genuinely tight comic performance in a film that could have thrown her away. After that, browse. Waiting... and Meet the Fockers are the comedies, Bombshell and The Last of Us are the prestige cameos, Clockwatchers is the odd nineties indie nobody talks about, and Rango is a reminder that she voices about four characters in half the animation you own.
The comedies
The broad comedy where the career started and where most people know her from. Serena in the Legally Blonde films is the one people quote, and Waiting is the cult restaurant comedy that has aged into something people rewatch.
The voice work
A whole parallel career in animation. Mama Imelda in Coco is a genuinely moving piece of voice acting and the best-known thing she has done, and El Tigre gives her the boy lead, which is common and invisible casting.
The dramatic turn
The recent work, which has changed how she is cast entirely. Suze in Euphoria is the pivot, a mother written as comic and played as something considerably sadder, and Bombshell gives her Jeanine Pirro.
