Ai Kayano
Ai Kayano is an actor, born 1987.
More than two hundred credits sit under Ai Kayano's name in this catalogue, and she got them on a very particular sound: light, precise, slightly withheld. She came up at Pro-Fit and has been with Office Osawa since, and she sings opening, ending or insert themes for a good number of the series she acts in.
The role people still name first is Menma in Anohana, a part that asks her to be relentlessly cheerful inside a story about grief, which is much harder than it sounds and is what made her.
The signature register arrived after: characters who process the world at one remove. Shiro in No Game No Life speaks in flat, exact fragments. Mashiro Shiina in The Pet Girl of Sakurasou is barely present in ordinary life and entirely present in her work. Alice in the Sword Art Online Alicization arc is all discipline and hard edges. Kayano makes flatness expressive, which is a rarer skill than the volume of the work suggests.
She is funny too, and that gets forgotten. Darkness in KonoSuba is broad, shouted comedy played with total commitment, and Yuriko Hori in Horimiya is a mother written as a nuisance. Between those extremes sit Sylphiette in Mushoku Tensei, Leilia in Maquia and Akari in March Comes In Like a Lion.

Where to start with Ai Kayano
New listeners should go to Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day first, short and famous for making people cry on schedule, with Kayano's Menma as the engine.
If that register suits you, Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms does the same emotional work as a film, and March Comes In Like a Lion is the most quietly excellent series here.
For the flat, precise mode, No Game No Life is the loudest showcase and The Pet Girl of Sakurasou the more human one. Sword Art Online is worth it from the Alicization arc onward, where her character finally matters.
And for comedy, KONOSUBA - God's blessing on this wonderful world! is where she throws the precision away and yells, which is a genuinely different actor. Horimiya is the gentlest thing on the list and a good place to end up.
The breakout roles
The early-2010s run that made her. Menma in Anohana is the one people cite, and Shiro in No Game No Life is the technical showcase, a near-affectless genius voiced without ever collapsing into monotone.
The comic register
Darkness in KonoSuba is a comic performance of real commitment and about as far from Menma as the same voice can travel. The other comedies use her for the girl who is entirely too confident about everything.
The dramatic work
The quieter parts, several of them in shows about grief. Maquia is the film to hear, where she plays a mother across a lifetime, and March Comes In Like a Lion gives her the warmest family in modern anime.
